Top 100 Football Shirts of 2019 - Part 9: 20-11

The best football shirts of 2019

As we prepare to enter the home straight of Top 100, it seems like a good time to reflect on some of notable recent trends. In fact, in many ways these next 10 shirts in particular cover 3 of the biggest developments we’ve enjoyed in 2019.

Firstly, we have yet another shirt from Nike’s collection of 3rd kits in this part. It’s been a banner year for the Swoosh, and it’s amazing to think how far we’ve come in just a short space of time. Two years ago all of Nike’s major teams essentially had the same template for their 3rd kits, but now we have a range of unique designs and a pleasing amount of variation.

Nike aren’t the only brand to have come on leaps and bounds in 2019 though. A lot of praise has to go to Umbro, who might just have had the best year of anyone. No one has been better at refreshing old kits for a new audience, and all four Umbro shirts in this part have elements of their design rooted in the history of their clubs, whilst still managing to stand tall on their own right.

Finally, we have to highlight the bespoke designs we saw at the Women’s World Cup. Nike deserve a tonne of credit, but we should also tip our caps to adidas for creating an absolute gem in the new Germany kit. It’s a design which many people wish we could’ve seen last year, and for good reason. I’m already excited to see what the next Women’s World Cup delivers from a kit perspective, and I wouldn’t have said the same at the start of the year.

So without further ado here are shirts 20-11.

Be sure to join us for the final part. It’s really good.

20 - PSG Third

top-100-shirt-of-2019-20

For this season's Nike 3rd kits, they decided to throw it back all the way to the 90s. For PSG, their second most iconic design gets a refresh: jacquard sashes and a vertical blue/red stripe down the side for good balance.

You can almost picture Damon Albarn or Liam Gallagher (although he'd probably pick Atletico's just for the sky blue colourway, if we're honest) wearing one of these, right? It's a shame it All had to be ruined by a terrible sponsor though *ba dum tss*.

19 - England Women Away

top-100-shirt-of-2019-19

England’s men’s and women’s football teams achieved eerily similar semi-runs in both their respective World Cups, but when it came to kits there was clear daylight between both squads.

This year, Nike went above and beyond anything they’d created for The Three Lions before, with a stunning burgundy design that made superb use of the national flower of England: the rose. The crispness of the rose detailing is what steals the show for me, and it makes a mockery of any kit England have had since the Umbro days.

18 - Tunisia Third

top-100-shirt-of-2019-18

Kappa appear to have used a similar technique to last year’s Napoli kit, to incorporate a stylised eagle into this Tunisia shirt. However, there is nothing subtle or hidden about this eagle. The eagle itself is a nod to the nickname given to the Tunisian national team, The Eagles of Carthage and it completely dominates the shirt.

The rest of the shirt is fairly straightforward as the red collar and cuffs contrast well against the black shirt with the usual Kappa logo, featuring on the sleeves.
- Pedro

There's that song that prompts us to "go where eagles dare". Not sure that's exactly what the Misfits were talking about, but the pattern on this kit is every bit as epic as the name "Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein".

I mean look at that eagle, it's staring right into your soul... Helps the base is black, as well. Surely does.

You love to see it.

17 - Everton Away

top-100-shirt-of-2019-17

I think this might be the most underrated shirt of the season actually. I’ve seen a lot of other publications going mad over Leicester’s pink away shirt, but this just seems superior in almost every way.

The salmon colourway is something that could’ve so easily gone wrong, but Umbro’s use of a two-tone sash really brings the whole thing together. It just looks so damn smooth, and the crest and sponsor logos stand out beautifully in that contrasting shade of navy - although, admittedly, we maybe could’ve done without the Angry Birds logo.

This is quite possibly the best use of salmon since brunch was invented, and the fact this bold colour is linked to the history of the club is certainly an added bonus.

16 - Club America Home

top-100-shirt-of-2019-16

Club America kits are always a little special, but this year I think they’ve actually exceeded all expectations.

That graphic on the chest really is something special, stretching out like a pair of eagle wings (they’re nicknamed ‘The Eagles’, which is a happy coincidence) and injecting a fantastic dash of colour. It stands out beautifully against that light yellow colourway, while it’s also nice to see the sponsors aren’t as obstructive as usual.

Everything here just works for me, despite their apparent mission to fill every ounce of available space. Well, you’ll certainly be getting your money’s worth if you buy one.
- Ben

The Home Depot logo finally looks good on a Club America kit. I can rest easy now.

15 - V-Varen Nagasaki Peace Jersey

top-100-shirt-of-2019-15

There’s a day I look forward to almost as much as Christmas. I mean, it’s not a specific date in the calendar, but rather a specific release. It's the day when hummel release their latest ‘Peace Jersey’ for Japanese team V-Varen Nagasaki.

For the past few years V-Varen’s ‘Peace Jerseys’ have been a joy to behold, with flamboyant designs that incorporate messages and symbols of hope. This year is no different, and like any good piece of art I have a new experience every time I gaze upon this kit.

14 - PSV Away

top-100-shirt-of-2019-14

This is probably one of the most Dutch football shirts I have ever seen, which obviously automatically makes it amazing.

The orange, eye-catching pattern visible on the sleeves is a nod to the club's county of origin, Brabant, which is a theme we've actually seen a lot in recent years; with football becoming an increasingly globalised sport, it's always nice to see club's trying to honour and stick to their heritage as much as possible. Some other neat bits of heritage are woven into various parts of the shirt, whilst it is rounded out with an orange version of the famous PSV crest.

13 - Germany Women Home

top-100-shirt-of-2019-13

This is the shirt that the Germany men’s team should have had in 2018, rather than what was literally a pale imitation of the famous 1988-92 shirt.

This also takes that iconic design as a base but evolves it far better, not least because it keeps the colour-scheme, which is what made the original so good.

12 - West Ham Home

top-100-shirt-of-2019-12

2019/20 has been a season where kit designers have looked to the past for their inspiration more than any previous year and West Ham United are at the top of the pile with their wonderful home kit.

The marketing phrase used at the launch of the kit was “Inspired by the class of ‘80” with Umbro giving us their version of that classic Admiral kit worn between 1977 and 1980 (a claret shirt with a unique blue yolk and sleeves), pairing this kit with claret shorts and socks to deliver a kit that us kit lovers will not forget.

Umbro’s designs have been right at the top of the tree and this West Ham kit might just be their best work for this season….. (and for full disclosure, I am a Millwall fan).

11 - Hull City Home

top-100-shirt-of-2019-11

"Ride The Tiger"... sang the great Ronnie James Dio once. Hull City have ridden it, fought it, defeated it, torn its skin apart and like a hero straight out of ancient Greek mythology, now wear it on their battle armou... home shirts. Glorious. Even more so than the "so bad it's good" 90s cult classic it takes after.
- Jack

This has me questioning why there aren’t more tiger-themed football shirts out there. It’s obviously not quite as crazy as their early-90s designs, but my word this is a lot of fun.

The jagged tiger graphic is just downright marvellous, clawed into the top of the shirt and ripping through the traditional orange colourway. This perfectly sums up the character of the club, as Umbro serve up something unique without coming off as gimmicky, and somehow manage to make tiger-print look cool again.

I was going to make a Frosties joke at this point. But this shirt is better than that.
