Best Running Gear: Tried & Tested Essentials You’ll Actually Use

Let’s be honest—running sounds simple, right? You just… run.

But as every runner quickly learns, there’s a little more to it than that. The right gear can be the difference between chasing a personal best and limping home with a blister the size of a tennis ball.

With so. much. running. stuff. out there (seriously, it’s a jungle of gels, gadgets, and gear), I’ve tested the best of the best so you don’t have to.

Whether you're gearing up for your first marathon or just jogging around the block for a sanity break, here’s the running gear that'll help you feel faster, comfier, and way more prepared.

Best Running Gear

How I Tested The Equipment

I put every piece of gear to the test by going on a run, mainly on concrete, around town (approx. 5k) to test the comfort and performance of each item, and also to see how they assisted my performance.

Best Running Gear: Tried and Tested

Asics Superblast 2

Best Mens Running Shoe

Quite literally an award-winning shoe—and honestly, I get it.

The ASICS Superblast 2 feels like running on a trampoline that also happens to hug your feet. The extra-high midsole cushioning gave me an insanely bouncy, responsive ride with every step—which, let’s be real, I definitely need on days when my legs forget how to be motivated. The combo of FF BLAS PLUS ECO and FF TURB PLUS cushioning is next-level: soft, light, and super springy. That FF BLAS PLUS ECO layer, in particular, made every run feel more energised without weighing me down. Bonus points for breathability too—no hot or achy feet, just solid support and breezy comfort from start to finish.

What We Like:

  • Very bouncy and responsive cushioning
  • Breathable and supportive
  • Great Colours

Saucony Ride 18

Best Womens Running Shoe

The Saucony Ride 18 is great; it's supportive, light on your feet, and always pushing you forward.

With more foam packed in and less overall weight than previous versions, I definitely felt more energy return with every step (which is much appreciated when I'm mentally bargaining over every kilometre). The grip is seriously impressive too—thanks to enhanced rubber up front and Flex Grooves, transitions felt smooth and stable. The engineered mesh upper struck a sweet balance between breathability and structure—my feet had room to breathe, stretch, and not overheat, but still felt locked in. And the cushioned heel collar? A dream. No blisters, no rubbing, just a comfy fit that actually respects my blister-prone ankles. A very easy “yes” from me.

What We Like:

  • Lightweight with great energy return
  • Durable grip and smooth transitions
  • Roomy yet stable fit

Nike Pegasus 41

Best Budget Running Shoe

The Nike Pegasus 41 is proof that you can have high-tech running shoes without draining your bank account—these are often on sale, which makes them a total win if you’re running on a budget.

Even at a lower price point, they’re still loaded with tech: dual Air Zoom units and a ReactX foam midsole gave me that lightweight, springy energy return that makes your feet feel way more ambitious than your brain sometimes does. The cushioning was responsive without being bulky, and the breathable mesh upper kept things cool and comfy. Honestly, for a daily trainer that’s wallet-friendly and fun to run in, the Peg 41 totally delivers.

What We Like:

  • Budget-friendly but still packed with tech
  • Springy feel
  • Lightweight and breathable mesh upper

adidas Terrex Techrock Running Vest

Best Running Vest

I’ve tried a lot of running vests, and most of them feel like I’m carrying a floppy backpack full of regrets—but not the adidas Terrex Techrock.

This one actually fits. It’s lightweight, comes in proper sizes, and has that close, body-hugging fit that stays put while you run. It’s super breathable too, so I didn’t finish my run feeling like I’d wrapped myself in a sauna suit. The pockets are genuinely useful—there’s a rear slip-in pocket for stashing bits and bobs and plenty of smaller ones up front for snacks and keys. Oh, and it even comes with two soft water bottles, which is a total bonus. Honestly, it’s the first vest I’ve worn that felt like it worked with me, not against me.

What We Like:

  • Snug fit
  • Breathable and lightweight
  • Loads of useful pockets + bottles included

Gymshark Bottle with Straw

Best Running Accessory

I’m weirdly picky when it comes to water bottles, but this Gymshark one? Absolute winner.

It’s got a wrist strap, which means I’m way less likely to launch it mid-run—always a plus. The built-in straw made sipping on the move super easy (no awkward lid fumbling while gasping for air), and it’s just the right size—not too bulky, not too tiny, and crucially, not heavy. The flip-lock lid keeps everything sealed tight too. Honestly, it’s rare for me to get excited about a water bottle, but this one totally ticks all the boxes. Hydration goals: achieved.

What We Like:

  • Wrist strap prevents accidental drops
  • Easy use
  • Lightweight

Oakley Hydra Sunglasses

Best Running Glasses

The Oakley Hydra might have just earned a permanent spot in my running kit.

First off—they look ridiculously cool. Like, “main character on a long run” cool. But it’s not all about the looks: they’re super lightweight and fit snugly without squeezing my head, which means no bouncing, no slipping, and no fiddling mid-stride. The lens clarity is top-tier—everything looks crisp, with zero glare. They blocked the sun like a pro but somehow still felt like I wasn’t wearing anything. Basically, they’re the kind of sunglasses that make you forget you’re wearing them… until someone compliments you on them.

What We Like:

  • Secure
  • Clear vision
  • Stylish design

Nike Short Sleeve Running Top

Best Mens Running Top

The Nike Miler is one of those running tops that just quietly does everything right—no fuss, no drama, just pure comfort.

The fabric is super lightweight and breathable, and even on a pretty hot run, I stayed cool (or at least, not “melting into the pavement” hot). The fit is that perfect in-between: loose enough to move freely but not flapping around like a windsock. I also love the bright colour options—not just because they look good, but because they’re actually great for visibility on evening runs when you're dodging both potholes and parked cars. It’s a solid, no-brainer staple.

What We Like:

  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Loose fit
  • Bright colour options for better visibility

adidas Own The Run Tank Top

Best Womens Running Top

The adidas Own The Run tank is an essential.

It’s made with AEROREADY tech, so it kept me feeling dry and cool my whole run. The breathable fabric moved with me effortlessly—no clinging, no riding up, just easy comfort all the way. I loved the fit too: not too long, not too cropped, and the open back detail? A total game-changer for airflow. The reflective accents are a smart touch for evening runs, and the colour options are actually really stylish. Basically, it’s the tank top I'd now reach for on all my runs.

What We Like:

  • AEROREADY tech keeps you cool
  • Open back
  • Reflective details

And there you have it—the gear that’s earned its place in my running rotation (and hopefully yours too).

Whether you’re chasing a marathon PB or just running for fun, the right kit really does make all the difference. From springy shoes to no-bounce vests and surprisingly lovable water bottles, these picks have been tested, sweated in, and fully approved.

So go on—gear up, lace up, and enjoy the run. Your future, better-dressed, blister-free self will thank you.
