Ahhh, long sleeve football shirts, how we’ve missed you. 

The glorious days of Beckham and Batistuta feel like a lifetime ago, back before the word “baselayer” had ever been uttered in the dressing room. Traditional long sleeves once reigned supreme, but the past decade has seen them become such a rare breed they almost bordered on extinction. 

But things are finally changing. This season, long sleeves are returning to both the pitch and the store shelves, softly whispering “buy me” from behind the confines of your phone screen. 

What happened to long sleeve football shirts?

Baselayers, that’s what happened. For well over a decade, football has leaned towards their moisture-wicking, skin-tight technology, leaving little room for long sleeve shirts to help players battle the winter chill. 

Naturally, this lack of on-pitch action led to a miraculous vanishing act in shops - for the most part, you could no longer buy your club’s latest shirt with long sleeves. Major bummer, indeed. 

Fortunately, some pretty high-profile names have been mounting a resistance. Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Leroy Sane are leading the charge, regularly rocking the longer sleeved version and sending us right back to the halcyon days of the 90s. 

It seems that shirt manufacturers are finally taking notice. Long sleeve football shirts are back on the shelves at last.
