best premier league kits every shirt ranked 2023-24

The British summer doesn’t always deliver sunshine but every year without fail, it delivers a ton of new Premier League kits.

We’re digging through releases from Prem newcomers like Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield Utd to see who'll look like they belong in the big time.

What will mid-table offer us? Last year, AFC Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Fulham threw some lively efforts into the mix.

Of course, it’s also impossible to ignore high-profile launches from stalwarts like Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Tottenham’s purple and neon monstrosity was our bottom-placed pick last season, so we can only expect better from them.

They may have lost their grasp on the league trophy, but Arsenal were #1 in our 2022/23 shirt ranking, thanks to their incredible black and gold away design.

Could they do it again? Let’s find out…

40. Arsenal Away

No, you aren’t looking at a training bib. Yes, this is their actual away kit.

The neon yellow with blue AND black? It’s a bit too much to take in all at once, and a risky combination which hasn’t really paid off.

We aren’t sure if this kit is a form of punishment for bottling the league last season, but one thing for sure is that fans will be keeping this ‘away’ from their wardrobes.

This shirt is a bit like marmite, and we do not like marmite.

39. Burnley Away

Brand: Umbro | 2022-23 Rank: N/A

Sunshine in the small north west industrial town of Burnley is rare. Premier League football is shining a light, but this shirt isn’t helping.

For some unknown reason, tyre marks seem to be something of a theme this season. Throw black and purple with speckled edges on yellow. Just no.

This one will be keeping some unwanted Kompany towards the bottom end of our table.

38. Manchester United Away

Brand: adidas | 2022-23 Rank: 10/40

The giant marketing machine at Manchester United can try to spin this however they want. They won’t escape the fact that this design is jarring.

Claims of maroon pulled from local architecture and green with stripes to represent the club’s history (which was bright green and yellow). It’s a bit of a stretch.

Cut it down the middle, add some buttons and you’ve got a baseball jersey. Which is probably why they launched it on their US pre-season tour.

37. Fulham Away

Brand: adidas | 2022-23 Rank: 14/40

We think one is supposed to be fun, but it’s just a bit…obnoxious. Grab your sunnies, because Fulham’s shade of pink really is something else.

It must have been a short design meeting that likely went like this: “Use the template? In a bright pink? OK.”

They can brand it ‘shock pink’ all they like, but not much imagination was required here. Adidas have offered up a bit of a dud we’re afraid.

Brand: hummel | 2022-23 Rank: 34/40

The struggling Liverpudlian side tried to introduce a pink away shirt last season, and it didn’t work. Even when they call it ‘coral’, it still doesn’t work.

In an attempt to fuse two retro classics (an interesting idea, at least), the broken graphic stripes don’t do anything to reignite the memory of 1992-94 or 1994-96.

A big betting logo tops off an average overall look. This shade of salmon is wasting its time swimming upstream.

35. Tottenham Hotspur Home

Brand: Nike | 2022-23 Rank: 33/40

Again? Really? It feels like Spurs are in a constant bid to steal any joy that their fans may have left. Sigh.

They’ve called it a ‘modern classic’, but it’s far from that. It’s clean and modern, yes. With a touch of navy trim and a needlessly bright red sponsor.

It has some weak marks on it about N17’s broadcasting history and it’s the first time they’ll wear all white in 10 years too…or something.

34. Nottingham Forest Home

Brand: adidas | 2022-23 Rank: 17/40

nottingham forest 2023-24 home shirt in red

Okay so there’s plain, and then there’s boring.

Adidas have clearly tried to capture an essence Forest’s late ‘70s kit, and it’s a decent effort but there’s just not enough to it.

With a no sponsor look, which we love, the shirt needs to have something else to make it more interesting. It seems to us adidas’ designers quit before they were done with this one.

33. Brentford Home

Brand: Umbro | 2022-23 Rank: 29/40

brentford 2023-25 home shirt in red black and white stripes
Image from Brentford FC.

The redeeming factor to Brentford’s home kit is that it’ll last for two years. If supporters decide to actually buy it, that is.

It’s a mish-mash effort with red, white and black combining in bizarre ways. When you throw a subtle gradient and dense black panels together, it’s risky.

Betting logos still don’t sit right with us, or likely Ivan’s PR team either. We love Brentford’s plucky spirit, but this is a swing and a miss.

Brand: Umbro | 2022-23 Rank: 35/40

First things first, it was nice of JD to let West Ham have their badge on the shirt too.

We’re unsure if the designer left the shirt on a table, then proceeded to put loads of wet glasses on it and thought “we’ll go with that design”... WHAT ARE THOSE BUBBLES?!

Umbro has stuck with the classic colours and the bubbles concept would have been such a nice design. Had they done it right.

We were hoping for an improvement on last season’s shirt, but alas, we can’t all get what we want.

31. Aston Villa Home

Brand: Castore | 2022-23 Rank: 31/40

aston villa 2023-24 home shirt in claret and blue
Image from Aston Villa FC.

We’ve said it before, claret and blue is a difficult palette. Throw in a betting sponsor and like Villa facing Man City away, they’re up against it.

Last season’s effort didn’t do so well either (31st). This one has a few interesting features, like a new badge which is slick. And some subtle vertical patterning, which is OK.

It would look infinitely better without the pipe running through the shoulder though. Little details, people. All in all, somewhat average.

30. Burnley Home

Brand: Umbro | 2022-23 Rank: N/A

burnley 2023-24 home shirt in claret and blue

There’s no doubt in our minds this is a sharp, classic shirt. However, something else which comes to mind is a vintage West Ham top. When 2 clubs have such similar colours, they NEED to differentiate somehow!

This shirt had huge potential, but we aren’t a fan of shirts having a betting logo on, and this one is HUGE! Sorry Burnley, you lost us at that point.

It’s not all about us though. We’re sure the fans will love this retro-style kit, with its trendy collar and sharp white details.

29. Bournemouth Home

Brand: Umbro | 2022-23 Rank: 5/40

bournemouth 2023-24 home shirt in black and white stripes

Red and black stripes, now that’s a palette we can get on board with. Much like their on pitch performance, Bournemouth never seem to do it as well as AC Milan.

Saying that, last year’s brave effort from Umbro was superb (5th). But this year they’ve taken a huge step backwards.

A single button collar, broken vertical striping and the option to buy without a sponsor? All ticks for us. It’s apt that this one will only just survive relegation though.

Yep, a retro remake is everyone’s bag when it’s done properly. This is a solid effort, but it doesn’t do enough to reignite a Liverpool legend.

In a bid to bring silverware back to Anfield, it’s designed with Shankly’s 1974 FA Cup-winning team in mind. And to be honest, it’s a carbon copy of that shirt.

We’ve no doubt that Liverpool fans will love this one, and they’ll be sure to test the club shop employees’ concentration with Szoboszlai prints.

A little like Wolves on the pitch, this shirt gets acceptable results without taking too many risks.

Plain, strong colouring keeps the identity of Wolves alive. The twinges of black and white on the collar and cuffs keeps it well rounded.

Nothing too much to shout about, but it looks smart. We imagine a fair few fans will still H-wang this one in their shopping basket.

26. Nottingham Forest Away

Brand: adidas | 2022-23 Rank: 13/40

nottingham forest 2023-24 away shirt in white and blue

Forest are fronting the kit release with the slogan “making waves”, which they certainly will be amongst the fans with this confusing kit.

With the light blue striped effect, we’re getting the words…Argentina shirt. Which is a little ironic, as last season's away shirt was rather like Brazil.

Although the colour scheme is pretty unreal, it doesn’t scream "Nottingham Forest” to us, more “identity crisis”.

25. Bournemouth Away

Brand: Umbro | 2022-23 Rank: 3/40

bournemouth 2023-24 away shirt in blue and white

Uh oh. It seems like Bournemouth have taken a leaf out of Forest's book with a wavy idea.

They'll be hoping for a better finish than 15th in the league though, as last season felt more like a ripple than a wave...

The water-like colour scheme makes it clear that Bournemouth want everyone to know they're a seaside town. We're sure of that much.

We’re not sure about the changing of the badge colours to match the shirt, as it loses a bit of their identity. However, the sponsor blending is brilliant as they can sometimes hog the spotlight on a shirt.

The minty teal of Brentford’s away shirt finished 22nd in our ranking last season. As it runs from 2022-24, we’re giving it a mild nod of approval again.

We mentioned the castle badge and thick sleeve trims, but it’s the overall colour which works best for us.

The little club from West London did OK on their travels last season, so they’ll be betting on themselves to get stronger results in 2023/24.

One of many retro entries on our list this season. Everton’s home effort is a neat, if not exciting, design from Danish legends, hummel.

It’s fairly simple, which will suit big Sean Dyche’s ideology. The white collar and trims improve it, using patterning from Goodison Park’s stanchions on each.

Bold Evertonian blue covers the main body. Fans will be hoping that some bold players step up for them this season.

Umbro has managed a nice replica of Luton’s 1974/75 shirt with a modern twist here, a nice touch for their first time in the Prem.

The classic orange and navy are a timeless combo, you can’t really go wrong. And with the discreet diamond pattern woven into the shirt, it really is the little things that count.

We think this is a really distinctive shirt for Luton, almost as distinctive as the entrance to their ground!

Nike has kept it very clean and simple with this shirt, and we love to see it!

One thing that’s caught our eye is the neckline, and we are big fans. It’s unusual, but complements the shirt design well.

Slightly disappointed by the Snickers addition, as the black background of the logo doesn’t compliment the shirt, but we’ll let that one slide.

Nike have done pretty well again with Brighton’s away shirt. Retro shirts are all the craze right now, and this is a stunning upgrade of their away kit from a decade ago.

We weren’t sure about the Snickers logo on the home shirt sleeve, but it fits much better here.

Some might argue that this shirt is just the home in different colours, but we see no issue with that if it works!

Small improvement for us would be the same neckline as the home kit, rather than rounded off, but all in all… love it!

Wow, where did 20 years go? This season’s sky blue Man City shirt celebrates two decades of their home, the Etihad Stadium.

Ironically, it’s a bit retro like Maine Road. Heavily influenced by Reebok’s 2003/04 home kit, Puma have brought back the white trims, patterned body and v-neck collar.

Van Buyten, Sibierski, Tarnat, Flood. A nostalgic hit of forgotten players has been delivered, thanks to this quality design.

It feels like Castore are trying to bed in the idea of “true Geordieism” with every shirt they produce for Newcastle United.

The fans up in the North East are a passionate bunch, so it makes no sense to mess with the classic black and white stripes. Castore haven’t.

Mild v-neck collar, matching pinstripe trims, monochrome sponsor. It’s all incredibly well balanced and tidy. Much like the side that Eddie has put together.

We really like this one, as simple as it is. No punches pulled, it’s a white crew neck with some neat maroon and blue detailing.

Iridescent badging is a trend we’re hopping on board with. And it’s been used here with maximum impact.

It does give a bit too much focus to Betway, but pssstt… you can buy an unsponsored version on the club site. Yay.

The black and white of London’s oldest club can sometimes be a boring affair, but adidas have turned out a smart look for their home 2023/24 kit.

Ignore Mitrović staring into your soul, and attention turns to the opposing shoulder colours. A risk which has paid off.

The subtle pinstriping throughout the white body gives it depth. Yes it’s simple, but it shows what can be done with the less lively palettes.

It’s not often that on an away strip, you see a pure reversal of a home kit design anymore. And we’re absolutely here for it.

The flash of orange offsets the simple white, with matching navy collar and trims to the home shirt. It does everything it needs to.

In what we expect to be a tricky campaign for The Hatters, there’s no doubt this will be covered in grass stains from their tough away journeys.

Hand it to Villa, they stick to their colour palette without question. This is a smart nod to their past, highlighted by a brilliant promo shoot at Aston Hall.

The subtle timeline print tells Villa’s story from their inception in 1874 and provides a sound base to promote the new club badge.

We think Emery’s upgraded Villans will be looking pretty good as they travel around Europe in 2023/24.

The Steel City is back in the Premier League, so it makes complete sense that they’d throw it back to the inaugural EPL season of 1992/93.

This lively yellow away has a clear look of the Umbro shirts from the mid-’80s and early ‘90s. We’re also glad they haven’t tried to modernise it, and the ribbed fabric is perfect.

Blades fans will be hoping that this design inspires a young William Osula to step up like Brian Deane did all those years ago.

After last year’s travesty (strong word, but true), Tottenham have decided to go for something a little more traditional. And we really like the navy and lilac combo they came up with.

Holographic badgework is something you’ll see across a lot of club shirts this season, it’s a trend which we’ll enjoy, at least until it’s been overkilled.

Harry Kane may have finally said auf Wiedersehen, but we’re sure that plenty of Spurs fans will be grabbing their ‘Maddison 10’ print on this trendy shirt.

The 2023/24 season has been a fairly tame affair in design terms. Let’s hope the season itself doesn’t follow that same pattern.

This Newcastle Utd away shirt is here to buck the simplicity trend. Hard. The dark green is improved by a tonal pattern throughout, making for an eye-catching look.

They’re “here to compete”, that’s what the slogan says. They did it in the league last season, so why not take Europe by storm?

Manchester United’s collared home kit from last season was a good effort (12th), but adidas’ 2023/24 release is every bit as good.

For a long time, MUFC fans have dreamt about the inclusion of a sublimated rose pattern. Now it’s reality and it looks excellent. Backed up well by smart black trims and stripes.

Yeah, so the close-up view of main sponsor Team Viewer is a bit much, but the rest of this shirt is good enough to look past it.

Capturing the history of Palace is something Macron are great at, proven once again with this shirt.

With a sash, something that always proves popular, dating back to kits from the ‘70’s and the colour scheme reflecting Palace’s first ever kit, it’s a great shirt.

Once again, right on point. The adidas x Arsenal partnership continues to thrive, with another cracker of a home shirt for this season.

Was gold decided before the men’s and women’s sides were beaten to their respective league titles? Who knows, but it looks beautiful across the badging and stripes.
