Yeah, home and away kits are fine. But third shirts? That’s where the party well and truly is.
Not binded by a set colour code or strict rules of tradition, the alternate third jersey is a blank canvas for designers.
Most clubs have one, so we’ve had to narrow down our search to the best 3 from the big leagues in Europe and the UK.
That meant scouring the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and the SPL in our hunt.
Take a seat, because here are the crackers that we stumbled across…

Image from Arsenal FC.
Teal and navy with a one-button collar and cannon badge. Plus, the bonus of Leah Williamson cruising around London on a Vespa in the promo.
One of the best shirts of the season, the Arsenal 2023/24 third kit is classy and assured. A lot like Dec in the middle of the park.

Image from Manchester United FC.
They may have fumbled a few designs in recent seasons, but Manchester United have nailed it with this low-fi third shirt for 2023/24.
The badge is delightfully devilish, and the white base with red collar is a simple and elegant combo. Will this quality transfer to the pitch? That remains to be seen.

Image from Newcastle United FC.
Coming in with strong performances along with a strong trio of shirts for 2023/24, it’s a newly-buoyant Newcastle United side.
The pattern is interesting and when you combine navy with bright yellow, it’s almost always going to win. This one certainly hits the Targett.

Image from Real Madrid CF.
The same template as is used on the Arsenal releases, adidas have clearly created a great canvas. This Real Madrid third shirt uses gold to perfection.
A lightly patterned black base sets the foundation for golden details to pop. The team that looks the business in bright white, can now flip the lights off in style too.

Image from Cádiz CF.
Those gold details are making us nod our heads again. Macron have produced a sharp example of a third shirt for Cádiz in 2023/24.
With an emerald green that wouldn’t look out of place on the coasts of Ireland, it’s the Andalucian port city that gets to enjoy this one.

Image from Athletic Club.
Back to the simple life, and something which would’ve worked for Man Utd too. Like all good design, the Athletic Bilbao third shirt for 2023/24 uses white space well.
Red with white keylines break up the cuffs and collar wonderfully, and the subtly-patterned base adds depth. Nico and Iñaki: brothers-in-garms.

Image from AS Roma.
Sometimes, simplicity is the best option. Quite possibly one of the finest shirts of the season, the Roma third kit is nothing short of sensational.
There’s no doubt that the flame-grilled Roman mosaics and Lupetto crest are the stars of the show. If asked for his opinion, Caesar would be giving it a big thumbs up.

Image from Fiorentina FC.
Flowers adorn all three Fiorentina shirts in 2023/24 and the idea has been pulled off effortlessly across them.
Purple is a powerful element, as you’d expect from a I Viola shirt. The pinks and reds in the flowery off-centre strip almost make it suitable summer wedding attire.

Image from Napoli FC.
Back with the black and gold combination, EA7 have made a third shirt that shows off a darker side to the light blue we associate with Napoli.
Using a truly Neopolitan background design, this stealthy and smart kit works on so many levels. This is an easy Victor-y for Osimhen’s men.

Image from Bayern Munich FC.
Remember when we talked about simplicity? When ‘less is more’ works, it really does work. For Bayern Munich’s third shirt, it’s the same story.
Lo-fi badges seem to be a theme in 2023-24, and we’re loving it. The lightly patterned base on this off-white design is as mesmerising as watching a Harry Kane shooting drill.

Image from Augsburg FC.
Trims and collar patterns that match, don’t you just love them? German outfit Augsburg and their partners at Mizuno have done it exceptionally well.
The palette works for Venezia, so there’s no reason why it wouldn’t work elsewhere. Green, orange and black, it’s Bundesliga bliss.

Image from VfB Stuttgart.
Choosing to include an image pattern in the base is a risk, but for VfB Stuttgart and their 2023/24 third shirt, it’s paid off.
Celebrating the history of their home grounds, the teal base offsets black details with aplomb. Jako have stepped it up here.

Image from OGC Nice.
Moving into France now, and this one is all about the overall colour. The purply-blue base is topped off by gold details. Basic, but beautiful.
Le Coq Sportif are showing their quality with this 2023/24 third shirt. Very Nice. Very Nice, indeed.

Image from Toulouse FC.
This Toulouse third is probably one the best of the entire Ligue 1 bunch for 2023/24. And it comes from the lesser-known Swedish sportswear brand, Craft.
The pattern features the official geographical codes of the areas surrounding Toulouse, with the club’s purple palette included. Clever.

Image from Lille FC.
Here’s a club which is usually in and around our shirt rankings, their partnership with New Balance continues to flourish with this Lille 2023/24 third kit.
Purple crops up again, and it’s topped off with some lively orange details. The base contains the ‘fleur-de-lys’, a symbol of Lille’s culture. You Lille beauty.

Image from Heart Of Midlothian FC.
Much talked about, immediately sold out. If you’re going to release a third kit in celebration of its 150-year history, Hearts x Umbro have just shown us how it should be done.
The promo shoot stylish was absolute perfection. Country manor, black boots, brown leather and lace balls. The kit? Crisp white with a classic badge in Hearts’ plum colour.

Image from Hibernian FC.
A brilliantly balanced design from the Scottish Premiership, thanks to Joma’s creation for Hibernian’s 2023/24 third kit.
Thin horizontal green lines are backed up by matching v-neck, sleeve trims and side vents on white. Hib, Hib, hooray.

Image from Kilmarnock FC.
It wouldn’t be a proper third shirt list if we didn’t include something a bit wild, would it? It’s the same third shirt for Kilmarnock this season, and we’re still loving it.
Inspired by the shirt worn by Killie’s iconic ‘keeper Bobby Geddes in the ‘90s, the hummel creation works today. It’s fun and we want it.
There were 100s to choose from, so this is our small pick of the best. If you agree or not, let us know on our socials!
