It’s been another dramatic year in the Premier League.

While Liverpool smash records and run away with the title, this season has been packed with jaw-dropping goals, iconic comebacks and more than its fair share of upsets. More importantly, pitches all over the country have been graced by some of the best football boots on the planet - as well as a half-decent player or two.

We’ve come a long way since the days of simple black leather, and players now have a multitude of brands, materials and colourways to choose from, with each new release promising to enhance their game.

But which boot is proving the most popular in the Premier League this season? I took a look at FootballBootsDB to find out…

Most Popular Boot Brands in 2020

Although the likes of adidas, Puma and New Balance have produced some truly stunning boots this year, nobody comes close to touching Nike.

The American brand proudly sponsors some of the biggest names in the Premier League, boasting the kind of star-studded lineup you’d only usually see on FIFA Ultimate Team. Virgil van Dijk, Kevin De Bruyne and Harry Kane are the current poster-boys, while Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling are also tied to the Swoosh.

In a database of 498 Premier League players, no less than 245 (around 50%) of them are currently wearing Nike football boots. Considering the increasingly strong opposition from other brands, such dominance really is no mean feat, with adidas proving to be their closest rivals with 198 wearers.

It seems as though both Nike and Liverpool have been enjoying similar levels of superiority this season, and these two powerhouses will look to tighten their grip after joining forces next season. Shudder.

6 Most Popular Football Boots in the Premier League

The range of boots out there really is ridiculous.

Even when they’re tied down to lucrative sponsorship contracts, Premier League players have a myriad of awesome designs to choose from. Modern boots provide certain advantages and technologies, meticulously designed to enhance specific attributes and help players raise their game.

But, amidst such unbelievable variety, what are the most popular football boots in the game right now? Here’s the current “Big Six”:

6. Nike Tiempo - 34 Players

The Nike Tiempo has been a mainstay of the Premier League for well over 20 years now, and things certainly haven’t changed in 2019/20. This leather classic has always been famous for its comfort and durability, evolving over time and culminating in the current-gen Tiempo Legend 8. It’s a thing of beauty.

While the Tiempo will always be associated with Ronaldinho and Sergio Ramos, it’s the Liverpool trio of Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson and Alisson leading this year’s cast. The Legend 8 continues the leathery traditions of the silo, but this time serves up a rather lovely quilted upper and Flyknit tunnel.

This is a Tiempo of the future, so it’s no surprise to see it proving so popular at the highest level.

Worn by: Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez, Alisson, Caglar Soyuncu, Ederson, Jan Vertonghen, Jorginho, Hugo Lloris, Ruben Neves.

5. adidas Nemeziz - 39 Players

The adidas Nemeziz is all about agility and outfoxing defenders. The Agility Bandage and Agility Weave systems are clear proof of that, with this technology delivering the kind of flexibility we’ve all been dreaming of for years.

Now in its third generation, the Nemeziz 19 builds upon the success of its predecessors to provide the best performance yet. Incredibly lightweight and boasting some truly unbelievable colourways, this is an elite football boot which belongs with the best players on the planet. Of course, that’s exactly why Jesse Lingard wears them.

Worn by: Roberto Firmino, Bernardo Silva, Jesse Lingard, Moise Kean, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Miguel Almiron, Lucas Torreira, Takumi Minamino, Dwight McNeil.

4. adidas Predator - 50 Players

Since its revival back in late 2017, the adidas Predator has taken the Premier League by storm. Paul Pogba is used heavily in all the marketing stuff, but the latest next-gen Preds are currently being worn by no fewer than 50 players in the top-flight, including Dele Alli, David Luiz and Fabinho.

The Predator 20 includes adidas’ latest game-changer: Demonskin. This is essentially a new rubber strike zone which uses more than 400 tiny spikes, designed to control and provide that famous Predator swerve. In fact, I reckon David Beckham could still do more than a decent job in a pair of these.

Making us all go a little dizzy with nostalgia, this feels very much like the Predators of old, but packed with awesome tech to keep it suitable for the modern game. It’s an absolute beauty.

Worn by: Paul Pogba, Dele Alli, Fabinho, Mesut Ozil, Aymeric Laporte, David Luiz, Gini Wijnaldum, Sokratis, Ilkay Gundogan, Kasper Schmeichel.

3. Nike Phantom Venom - 67 Players

On the right feet, these boots are absolutely lethal. The Nike PhantomVNM is designed very much with power and precision in mind, delivering the kind of deadly finishing which can make goalkeepers feel a little weak at the knees. You just need to look at Harry Kane to understand exactly what I’m talking about.

These boots are built upon the legacy of the Hypervenom, serving up a larger strike zone which is designed to improve control while shooting. Not too bad at all. In fact, this isn’t even just your typical striker’s boot, and it’s packed with all kinds of goodies which makes it suitable for players all over the pitch.

The Flynit upper provides a comfortable, secure fit, while the HyperReactive soleplate ensures you’ve always got plenty of traction. Just as importantly, the design on these things is absolutely insane. Seriously, those T90 vibes are just impossible to ignore.

Worn by: Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, Raul Jimenez, Andy Robertson, Callum Wilson, Joelinton, Mason Greenwood, Phil Foden, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

2. adidas X - 75 Players

There was a moment this season when Son Heung-Min picked up the ball deep in his own half, then beat the entire Burnley defence as he ran up the other end and scored. A few weeks later, both Gabriel Martinelli and Mo Salah proved similarly impossible to catch, while Daniel James has had defenders spitting dust pretty much all season.

What do they all have in common? Yep, they all wear the adidas X. This is a football boot for speed freaks, pace merchants or whatever else you want to call them, delivering the kind of paper-thin upper you expect to rip at any moment. But the X is just as durable as it is speedy, and you’ll probably be surprised at just how cushioned it feels on-foot.

In fact, the latest generation of X is much more than your typical speed boot, and introduces features which make it suitable for a broader range of Premier League players. Of course, if you’ve got blistering pace then that probably helps, but these are by no means off-limits for those with a different style of play.

Worn by: Mo Salah, Son Heung-Min, Gabriel Martinelli, Jamie Vardy, N’Golo Kante, Dan James, Benjamin Mendy, Scott McTominay, Gabriel Jesus, Lucas Digne.

1. Nike Mercurial  - 112 Players

Image from Nike.

The most popular football boot in the Premier League is the Nike Mercurial. In fact, it has been for some time now. Since the days of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Thierry Henry and Didier Drogba, the Mercurial has been worn by the most exciting players in the country, built for swaggering players with a trick or two up their sleeve.

Due to its insane popularity, the Mercurial has become the highest-scoring football boot in Premier League history. The trio listed above all clinched Golden Boots in a pair of Mercs, while Marcus Rashford and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sit near the top of this year’s goal-scoring charts.

Although they’re split between the Vapor and Superfly models, the Mercurial currently has 112 wearers in the top-flight, and the latest generation is proving particularly popular amongst. Softer, lighter and even more responsive than its predecessor, the latest Mercurial delivers a performance of the very highest level - and remains the number one boot on the planet right now.

Worn by: Marcus Rashford, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Richarlison, Bruno Fernandes, Adama Traore, Wilfried Zaha, Riyad Mahrez, Nicolas Pepe, Anthony Martial.
