Sporting were originally named 'Kansas City Wiz' and are one of the ten original clubs who made up the inaugural MLS season in 1996. They've played in both the Eastern and Western Conference due to Kansas being based in the exact centre of the United States.

They started out in the West, moving to the East when the MLS was expanded in 2005, only to return to the West in 2014 when new East Coast sides New York City FC and Orlando City SC were introduced.

Despite the constant moving around (they’ve also had three different home grounds since 1996), it hasn’t stopped the Wizards from picking up a good haul of silverware over their short history.
