League History
Formed back in 1956, the Turkish Süper Lig has been dominated by Istanbul sides Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beșiktaș, with Trabzonspor and Bursaspor both picking up titles every so often. The league is built up of 18 club sides, with only the winners progressing into the Champions League. Although some sides and players may not be household names, the clash between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray (also known as the Eternal Rivalry) is infamously known within football as one of the most fierce derbies. Former player and manager Graeme Souness didn’t make himself popular with Fenerbahçe when he was manager of Galatasaray, after he planted Gala’s flag in the centre of Fenerbahçe’s pitch following a win over their neighbour. Rather him than us!
